What are the Michigan Safety Belt/Child Car Seat Laws?
The laws regarding seat belt/car seat usage are as follows: Under the age of 1 a child must be in a car seat while riding in the front or rear seat of a vehicle. It is recommended that you have the car seat facing the rear. It is also HIGHLY recommended that you do not use a car seat in the front if the vehicle is equipped with airbags. From 1 up to 4 years of age the child must be in a car seat while riding in the front. If the child is in the rear, they must be in a car seat or safety belt. From the age of 4 up to the age of 16 the occupant must be wearing a safety belt while riding in the front or rear of the vehicle. Failure to do so can result in the driver receiving a citation. It is recommended that children, under the age of 12, are not seated in the front seat if the vehicle is equipped with airbags.
