What are the medicines used for ovulation induction?
• FSH – Follicle Stimulating Hormone (Puregon) is given as a daily subcutaneous injection, which acts directly on the ovaries to produce eggs. Puregon is a recombinant form of medicine (chemically produced). Most women require the Puregon injection for 6-10 days. • HCG – Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (Pregnyl) is given when adequate stimulation has been achieved. A dose of 5000 units will initiate ovulation (release of the egg/s) within 36-40 hours after the injection. A dose of 1500 units may be given in the luteal phase (2nd half) of the cycle to support the growth of the lining inside the uterus (the endometrium).
