What Are The Measures Available For The Protection Of Indigenous Rights To Land And Natural Resources?
Ichoku Precious Ifeoma p_ichoku@yahoo.co.uk Abstract: Land and related natural resource rights are of fundamental importance to indigenous peoples since the land that they inhabit often constitutes the basis of their economic livelihood and can be the source of their cultural and social identity. The growth of oil and gas exploration and production and mining activities have given rise to demands that governments and multinational corporations take account of indigenous claims to land and resources as an integral part of their project planning process. In the light of these considerations, this paper seeks to examine the content of indigenous peoples’ rights as found in international instruments. An attempt will be made at highlighting the impact of mining activities on the rights of indigenous peoples and measures available for the protection of these rights.
