What are the major types of childhood leukemia?
Leukemia can be separated into groups based on the speed of onset (acute or chronic) and also by which cell type is affected (lymphocytes, myelocytes, etc.). Chronic leukemia is uncommon in children. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of childhood cancer and accounts for over 75% of acute leukemias in children. With current treatment regimens, over 95% of children with ALL achieve remission and nearly 80% of these children survive long-term.
