What are the major “problematic issues” with Land Rover Defenders?
Nothing plagues these Land Rover Defenders more than rust and corrosion. Issues like the frames not bring sent from the factory with a protective coating, bending exhaust pipes upright (so as to hold water), and using metal door hinges and metal exterior hardware (in lieu of stainless or alloy) are the cause for many of the rust issues. Especially when a great number of these vehicles were sold to customers in coastal communities (with salt air and salt water), customers in the Northeast and out West (where salt is used on the roads). Corrosion is mainly found on the body panels in the form of paint bubbles. What you are not seeing is the chemical reaction known as “electrolysis” which occurs when two dissimilar metals touch (steel and aluminum). This reaction causes the aluminum and attached paint to bubble or blister. These are mainly found in the bottom of the door panels.
