The muscular system is that which, in conjunction with the nervous system, allows an organism to move. Three types of muscles are in the human body.Skeletal MuscleSkeletal muscle makes up the majority of the muscular system; the human body has around 640 skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles contract and extend, which causes movement.Skeletal Muscle FunctionSkeletal muscles are connected to neurons, and the interaction of neurons and muscles allows an individual to flex the muscles voluntarily.Cardiac MuscleCardiac, or heart, muscle is controlled by the automatic nervous system and is not controlled by the conscious nervous system. Heart muscle differs from skeletal muscle in that its fibers are connected to one another and do not separate during contraction and expansion.Smooth MuscleSmooth muscle, like cardiac muscle, is totally controlled by the automatic nervous system and functions without conscious prompting.
