What are the major functions of an ITG?
An ITG is a device that bridges the PSTN and IP network, such as Internet, to convert voice calls into IP packets and to transport it into IP network, and vice versa. Its major functions include call processing, compression/decompression, packetization, lost packet recovery, echo cancellation, billing, and network monitoring, etc. Sometimes the gatekeeper may be emerging as a part of the ITG to provide authorization and authentication, to keep call detail records, to monitor network bandwidth, to provide real-time network management, to balance the load, and to provide interfaces to existing legacy systems.
