What are the major challenges facing the maritime industry?
One of the greatest challenges is ports congestion. Ports congestion is the bane of the Nigeria maritime industry. It is a major challenge not just to the clearing agents but also to the government. This is because it is denying the government of revenue. Shipping is an international activity; before any vessels leave their countries’ ports, they want to know what the situation is before they arrive. When they get a not too impressive answer – they just divert to a neighbouring country and ports. This leads to loss of revenue to the government, and encourages smuggling.
