What are the main types of bone cancer?
The most common primary bone cancers are: • Osteosarcoma, also known as osteogenic sarcoma. This is the most common type of primary bone cancer. It is found most commonly in the bones of the knee and upper arm. It occurs most often in young people aged 10 to 30 years. • Chondrosarcoma. This type of cancer starts in the cartilage, the flexible tissue that lines the joints. The most common locations of this tumor are the pelvis, upper leg and shoulder. It’s most common in people older than 40 and rare in those younger than 20. • Ewing’s sarcoma. This type usually forms in the nerve tissue of bone marrow. The most commonly affected sites are the backbone, pelvis, legs and arms. It’s most common in children and teens and rare in people older than 30. What are the symptoms? Pain is the most common symptom of bone cancer. The pain can vary in intensity depending on the location and size of the tumor. For example, tumors that occur close to joints may cause joint swelling and tenderness. But
