What are the main types of abortions?
The types are medical and surgical. Surgical abortions can only be performed before 12 weeks gestation, whereas medical abortions can be performed up to 24 weeks as the law stands at the moment. During a surgical abortion the woman is given a general anaesthetic, taken into theatre and the baby is essentially sucked out of her via a device inserted through the cervix. A medical abortion is the initiation of labour. Before 12 weeks this is obviously less traumatic, but after 12 weeks you will be giving birth tom something that looks like a baby. Also some babies who are “aborted” at 24 weeks can survive for minutes to hours after birth and so are technically alive and have to have a death certificate. If you want to have an abortion you need to speak to your GP and they will be able to refer you to a local centre where you can discuss your options, but get in quick as the earlier you get it done the less traumatic it will be for you. Good luck.
