Many women had to. World War 2 had conscripted a huge amount of males, and I believe a lot of them also had jobs in industry (another reason why someone had to do it). The most common job was working in munition factories, and it was well received by women. They were well paid, arguably better paid than before. Some women were just ‘in it for the money’ others were just doing their bit. Many women found war work gave them an opportunity to make new friends and many of the factories organised recreational activities, many being sports. Though the conditions of the factories differed greatly. I recall some establishments were only half-finished, without roofs, etc. As you could imagine, it was extremely dangerous working in the factories. The poisonous gas that filled the air in some foundries had rotted the women’s clothes and bodies. Over 80% of women working in these factories were to some degree poisoned by their work.
