What are the main philosophical “points” of existentialism?

Nietzsche was a forerunner of the existential school of thought, among another philosopher whose name escapes me (shame, I know.) He began with constructive nihilism, but never really used the term “existentialism.” Existentialists can be theists or atheists, but they don’t accept that life has an intrinsic meaning/purpose. Ideally, we create or discover our own rules and meaning. Existentialism is kind of sketchy to define, because so many people contributed to it and it really became a social movement of sorts for a while.
