What are the main items to remember when changing the oil in my engine?
Ideally the engine should be hot to avoid the settling of contaminants which occurs in a cold engine. Therefore draining oil from a hot engine removes a greater proportion of these contaminants than from a cold engine. In a cold engine more contaminants settle to the bottom of the sump, being left behind when the oil is drained. The filter should be changed at each oil change. This ensures that the maximum amount of old oil is removed from the engine otherwise the new charge of oil will be contaminated with as much as a litre / quart of used oil. Reference should be made to the owner’s manual for additional procedures, for example inspection of the oil pan’s suction screen.
