What are the main differences in religious freedom between American and European schools?
I will try to answer here the difference between European and American schools. Of course, every country is somewhat different. In the US there are both state schools and private schools. Most — but not all — of the private schools are religious. The private schools must satisfy state standards — but they can also provide religious education. In state schools, teachers can discuss religion (its history and ideas), but they are prohibited from promoting any kind of religious belief. Teachers cannot encourage students to be Christians, for example. In Europe, many of the state schools teach religion — typically Protestantism or Catholicism. In most cases students who do not wish to have religious education are permitted to attend a more neutral course on ethics. Of course, there are many other differences. But a basic difference is that religion is more likely to be taught in European state schools than in American schools. Q [Dr. Ali Al-Hail]: Hi Dr. Gunn, this matter depends upon h
