What are the main barriers to HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, particularly in third world countries?
There are barriers that are existing now in a place like Haiti which are lacking of infrastructure, no roads etc., but the bigger barriers have been the attitudes of people like me, people who are in charge of making decisions. If people like me have this defeatist attitude, “well, it’s just too difficult, there are too many social and infrastructural barriers,” then of course nothing gets done. So I would say bigger problems in terms of barriers are, and after naming poverty as the main one, this sort of “hang-dog” attitude of the Western experts, and with that kind of attitude, you really cannot get anything done. How do you approach this ‘defeatist’ attitude? By saying, “yes it can be done and we can show you because we already did it.” We don’t think that our projects are — they’re not big projects — but you’ll see today.
