Japanese Maples trees can be pruned. My mom also has one on her front lawn. I prune it every other year. You have to realize that most Japanese types of trees are grown naturally in Japanese banzai gardens. Therefor, they are used to being pruned. It is OK to remove entire branches. In fact it you don’t: they tend to look overgrown and too thick. So you don’t have to talk to a nursery about cutting off branches. Its important to have a long term plan on how you want the tree to look over the years and cut only several branches per year or every other year.
