The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will issue a license only after it is satisfied that the disposal facility and its operators meet all the safety requirements specified in state or federal regulations. This fact sheet summarizes the standards that the disposal facility must meet, outlines the licensing process, and describes some of the information included in a license application. It should be noted that this information is presented in detail in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 10, Part 61 (10 CFR 61), “Licensing Requirements for Land Disposal of Radioactive Waste”.
