What are the long-term side effects of steroids?
With regular or prolonged use of steroids, longer-term side effects can include: • thinning of the skin • thinning of bones (osteoporosis) • increased blood pressure • diabetes • very rarely, some people can experience severe damage to the hip (known as avascular necrosis of the hip) It is not recommended to use steroids on a regular (‘pulsed’) basis or in progressive forms of MS. Studies have shown a lack of positive effect. However, steroids are generally well tolerated when given to treat relapses, and side effects are normally short-lived, but anyone who is prescribed a course of steroids should be aware of the possible side effects and should be monitored by a health care professional.
