What are the limitations on the data used in the metrics?
Energy expenditure for each company is estimated based on an energy model, not based on actual energy expenditures reported from each company. Using actual energy expenditure data from individual companies would be more accurate. However, collecting such data on a large scale is complex and resource intensive. In some cases, actual energy consumption data for companies may not be available. The use of modeled energy expenditure data provides an appropriate level of accuracy for calculating industry medians and quartile ranges. The purpose of the Energy-Related Financial Metrics is to allow general comparisons with industry norms and to raise awareness, not to provide statistical certainty.
