WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF 12‐LEAD ECG AS A SCREENING TOOL?
In keeping with other screening tests, the ECG cannot identify all athletes at risk of SCD. In particular, it fails to identify athletes with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease and congenital coronary anomalies, and given the high prevalence of unsuspected atherosclerosis in athletes aged over 35 years, its efficiency is limited in the older age group. Indeed, ECG screening alone in older athletes has the potential for a large number of false‐negative results and is not recommended by the authors.
