What are the lighting requirements for a heliport?
The helipad will require a lighting system. The FAA has specifications for heliport lighting, which can include:perimeter lights, landing direction lights, floodlights, and beacons [a list of lighting components can be found on page 20 of “Children’s Heliport Planning Report” which can be found on Children’s web site]. SOAR requested the specific lighting plans from Children’s in August and was recently informed that a detailed plan would be created as part of the State of Illinois review process. Unfortunately, this step in the process would occur after a zoning change was granted, preventing the community from fully understanding the proposed lighting system and its potential impact.
