The position was once a Cabinet post, but now reports to the secretary of defense. The position covers the activities of both the United States Navy and the Marine Corps, plus, in some circumstances, the Coast Guard. Responsibilities The secretary of the Navy is responsible for all the Department of the Navy’s affairs. The responsibilities specifically laid down in law include matters relating to troops, such as recruitment, training and mobilization; matters relating to materials such as constructing and maintaining military equipment and overseeing supplies; and administrative matters.
