What are the legal consequences of abusive phone calls?
Abusive phone calls at work are an infringement and denial of a person’s right to dignity and security, including physical and psychological integrity, as guaranteed by Canadian and provincial laws and their codes or charters of rights and freedoms. If serious threats are uttered or if used with criminal intent (ex.: criminal harassment), abusive phone calls may constitute an offence under the Criminal Code. A conviction according to the Law or under the Criminal Code can affect a person’s right to practice a trade or profession.
