Australian Photographer Eddie Major (http://www.eddiemajor.com) “has controversially recreated the deaths of…Columbine High School killers” in an artwork as part of the annual South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA). The 42″ photograph (titled: After Columbine) depicts the suicide of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who murdered twelve students and a teacher before turning their guns on themselves in April 1999. Instead of guns, the artwork shows the two figures armed only with water pistols. And in the place of blood, the two boys appear stained in a mysterious blue liquid. (below: quotes from artist) Major describes his work as an ‘exploration of the culture of fear and paranoia in western society’, and claims the artwork does not glamorise or excuse violence yet rather is a ‘condemnation of gun violence.’ During a radio interview with the artist a local talkback host (Jan Beasley, 5AA) described the works at ‘disturbing’.
