What are the “Last Rites” for a Catholic?
The Catholic Church has a combination of rituals which were commonly referred to as the “last rites.” These include the Anointing of the Sick, the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and the reception of the Eucharist, known as Viaticum, i.e. “Food for the Journey.” Today, Catholics are encouraged to celebrate these sacraments not as “last rites” but as grace-filled moments in preparation for death.
