Researchers and teachers alike agree that academic rigor is key to success in high school, with students and their parents contributing to high academic achievement. Parents should encourage their high school student to take more mathematics, science, and critical language courses in high school, even if they are not required. Also, they should encourage teens to challenge themselves scholastically—for example, by taking more Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school. As for students, you too can (and should) take an active part in ensuring academic achievement. Get to know your high school counselor, who is a resource to you and can also be your advocate with teachers and colleges.
