What are the key practices/beliefs of Muslims?
Muslims believe in one God and around 124,000 prophets (who receive the Word of God) – 25 of these prophets are held in high esteem and are also messengers (requested by God to spread the Word). These 25 are mentioned by name in the Qur’aan, and include Muhammad, Jesus, Moses, Abraham and Noah. The Islam Holy Scriptures is called the Qur’aan (or Koran) and Muslims believe this is the literal word of Allah sent through Muhammad. It is thought that the only valid version of the scriptures is the original Arabic version. Muslims also believe in the words of the Torah (sent to Moses – see also ‘What is Judaism?’ and the Old Testament within Christianity for references to these teachings), the Psalms sent to David and the Gospel sent to Jesus (seen as a prophet as with Judaism and also as the Messiah as with Christianity – he is expected to return to Earth with another messianic figure – the Mahdi).
