What are the key differences between Ultrium format Generation 3 and Generation 4?
As stated in the LTO Technology six-generation roadmap, speed and capacity are expected to increase with each generation of the Ultrium format. Ultrium format Generation 4 increases the capacity from 400GB to up to 800GB (uncompressed) using Generation 4 data cartridges. The data transfer peak performance speed increases from up to 160MB/second compressed in the Ultrium format Generation 3 to up to 240 MB/second native in Generation 4. The Ultrium format Generation 4 provides users with outstanding data and investment protection because of its capability to read-and-write Generation 3 cartridges in the Ultrium Generation 3 format. In addition, the LTO Ultrium generation 4 includes hardware based tape drive encryption specifications to help users address data security concerns.
