What are the key components of EC?
Three major components should be considered: global distribution network, network equipment, and local access equipment. Global distribution network technologies include fiber optic cable and coaxial cables for international transmission of communication. Increasingly, global transmission is capable via wireless transmission and satellite networks. Network equipment includes routers, digital switches, hubs, and broadband transmission lines such as ADSL, asymmetrical digital subscriber line, or ISDN (integrated services digital networks). Local access equipment represents computer modems, TV set-top boxes, and WEBTV. Of course, the concept of “convergence” suggests that many different pieces of equipment are coming together to potentially provide to participants a seamless, unitary technological platform that will enable a user to conduct the same activities across different devices.
