What are the key components of an academic scheduling policy?
The first component is to agree upon the objectives of the academic scheduling process. How will attainment of these objectives be measured? Typically, quality of the instructional environment, efficient use of resources and the equitable treatment of the various stakeholders in the process are the objectives. The second component is to define stakeholder and their control. This amounts to assigning the types of activities that should be scheduled by whom. A campus should decide which activities are typically pre-assigned, which are made by the departments and which by a central scheduling office. A related issue is which types of rooms are controlled by whom. Generally, lab activities that require a special room or group of rooms are likely to be pre-assigned into rooms that are at least partially controlled by one or more department.
