What are the key characteristics of democracy?

0

A democracy is: a government run by the people. This means: The people vote on everything before it is executed. This includes laws, decisions regarding foreign policy and diplomacy, and everything else. Please do not confuse “democracy” with “republic”. In a republic, the people vote to choose representatives who vote, make laws, and make the governmental decisions, speaking for the people who elected them. There is a big difference. Many people in America would say that the U.S. is a democracy, however, it was really meant to be a republic, and now, since the 17th amendment to the constitution, changing the method of electing senators, is properly termed, “a democratic republic”. So we are not one or the other, we are in reality a cross between the two. Hope that helps!
