What are the Japanese karate belt color ranks in order ?
Today, there are hundreds types of Karate around the world. But if you’re asking about some of the original Karate from Japan, the belt ranking system are like this: White White stripes Orange / Red Orange / Red stripes (Orange / Red and Orange / Red stripes doesn’t appear in some Karate) Blue Blue stripes Yellow Yellow stripes Green Green stripes Brown Brown stripes Black (1st Dan until 10th Dan) This example is from my Karate style (Kyokushin).
I varies massively between the different styles of karate, the different governing organisations within the style (there are multiple associations/federations within each style), and sometimes it varies depending on the individual school/club as well, some instructors are given the freedom to choose a belt system for their dojo. The answer to your question is – ask the sensei at the club you’re considering joining. Also don’t get too hung up on belt colour – learning the art and achieving whatever goals you have from learning it is what’s important. Not the fabric holding your Gi together. Lastly if you merely want and example of belt order then in my club (Wado-Ryu) its: White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Brown, Brown, Black. Black remains the belt for all Dan ranks up to 10th and we generally don’t display dan bars on the belt to denote specific rank.
