What are the issues facing GUATEMALA?
Here is the answer to your question. Guatemala’s problems today are mainly politically focused. Our government system is very corrupt and oppression of the poor classes helps maintain a huge gap between the rich and the poor. Education is the number one problem. Our literacy rate is just over 70%, the lowest in Central America. This leaves hundreds of thousands of people that can’t read. Education is not mandatory and the public education system is the worst in Central America. This leads to higher birth rates, higher crime rates, lower wages, prostitution, drug use and an increase in poverty. Education is our leading problem here. Secondly, our police force is impotent. They certainly have police, and they roam the streets everywhere, but they are not qualified or trained to shoot the automatic weapons they carry (which are often times larger than the person carrying it). The police are underpaid and under trained. They take bribes from anyone to let them off for simple crimes. There
