What are the instructions for the 3-hour glucose tolerance test?
A. You need to be fasting for 12 hours prior to your test. Nothing to eat, but you can drink all the water you want. It is okay to take your prenatal vitamins, and any other medications that can be taken without food. Start time is 8am sharp. Please tell the front desk that you are here for your 3-hour glucose test. We will call you back to the lab and draw your blood to check your fasting blood sugar first. Then we will give you a drink similar to the one you had with your glucose screen, only it has twice the glucose content, and it is lemon-lime flavored, not orange. Then we will drayw your blood and check your glucose at 1, 2 and 3 hours after you’ve had your drink. Bring a good book, crafts, or paperwork to do because you will be here for 3 hours. You need to stay in the building the entire time, and remember to wear a watch because you are responsible for watching the time and coming back to the lab when required.
