Exactly? No clue. But I’m adventurous enough to give it an educated stab. There are basically 6 families of spirits in wide consumption: wine, whisky, tequila, rum, vodka, gin. Just about everything imaginable is in one of these families. Most cordials and liqueurs are made from wine. Absinthe must, in its primary components, be made of wine, soaked wormwood (its signature), and anise or fennel (the key flavouring). The colour suggests fennel, rather than anise.
