What are the independent and dependent variables in this sentence?
In A: the independent variable is weather the person slept or not. and the dependent variable is how well they remember the poem. This is because weather they slept or not is independent of the otherwise random way in which one would select test subjects, and their ability to remember is thus dependent on that independent variable. In B: The presence of others is the independent variable, and how willing a person is to help is the dependent variable. Thinking of it in terms of a survey always helped me remember this. If you select a random cross-section of society for a survey, then divide them based on one fact, that one fact will then be independent of the random selection process. And any variance from the control will thus be dependent on that independent fact alone.
