What are the impacts of the Port Phillip Bay channel deepening likely to be?
The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring the impact of channel deepening on the environment, marine-based businesses and users of the Bay is minimised. To this end extensive environmental investigation has been undertaken. No significant adverse effects of water level changes on vegetation or infrastructure have been identified. Methods for management of dredged material have been selected in accordance with best practice principles and the waste hierarchy specified in the Environmental Management Plan. In order to boost Bay tourism in the coming peak holiday season, the Victorian Government has recently announced a $9.2 million Port Phillip Bay Business Support Package. Part of the funding will be used to coordinate and implement a destination marketing campaign to promote the diverse tourism products and services that the Bay offers domestic and overseas tourists.
