What are the historical facts of MJE in relationship to the community of MJ?
The following information was graciously provided by Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Hibbett of Mt. Juliet. Both are former mayors, and Mr. Hibbett is the official historian for Mt. Juliet/West Wilson County. The Mt. Juliet Elementary School facility has been an important part of the community for over fifty years. It has been used as an elementary, junior high, and high school structure throughout this period. “Early History” According to the writings of the late Dixon Merritt, formal education for the Mt. Juliet area was first started in a church building that Ezekiel Cloyd built on land he donated for a church site around 1813. A storage building on Old Lebanon Dirt Road was converted into a schoolhouse and was used until the mid 1840’s. This school was actually chartered as Mt. Juliet High School in 1854. Around 1923, a local property tax and personal donations allowed a new brick building to be built on the site of the old building. This building served as an elementary school and high school u
