Pakistan came into being on 14th august, 1947. at that time it was governed by the Governmnet of India act, 1935, an act sed by the then colonial power, Britain. Pkaistan had an elected constituent assembly, which failed to draft a constitution till 1956. The first constitution, which declared it to be a republic with parliamentary system, was promulgated in 1956. However, it was abrogated by the first martail law in 1958, and Ayub Khan, cheif of the army, took over. A new presidential constitution was promulgated in 1961, and Ayub Khpasan got elected as president as a civilian head of the state and governmnet. Pakistan was then composed of two geographically seperated wings, West Pakistan (the present Pakistan) and East Pakistan (presently Bangladesh). The relation between the two wings detoriated during this period and a civil war ensued, with Ayub Khan resigning and Yahya Khan, the then Army cheif, took over.
