What are the heaviest elements stars are know to fuse in their cores?
Silicon is usually the last thing to burn (and only very massive stars get hot enough to fuse this). Once iron is formed, the star can no longer produce energy by fusion: energy must be put in to stick iron nuclei together. We’ll talk more later about what happens when a massive star runs out of fuel.
