A. Although disease is a possibility, the primary threat from porcupines is their quills. Each of the 30,000 quills on a single porcupine is needle-sharp and barbed. The quills are not easily removed and animals usually require veterinarian care, which humans with embedded quills should seek medical attention immediately. The quills will not work loose like a splinter, but tend to dig into the flesh and can penetrate internal organs, causing death.
