What are the health benefits of popcorn?
Popcorn is a whole grain, which is a high-quality carbohydrate that is low in calories. Because popcorn is 100% whole grain, it is a good source of fiber. A study released in the summer of 2009 by Dr. Joe Vinson, a professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, found that popcorn also provides healthy antioxidants. In fact, because it is unprocessed, according to the study, popped popcorn provided more antioxidants than any other snack food tested. Popcorn is also naturally cholesterol-free and sugar-free. Trail’s End microwave popcorn and cheese corn are made with canola oil, which has zero grams of trans fats and low saturated fats. A whopping 93% of canola oil is comprised of beneficial polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats that supply Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids; help to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol; and help to prevent coronary disease.
