What are the grooming requirements of the breed?
Few. The Tibetan Mastiff is a very clean dog with both a down coat, and a full coat of guard hairs. This double coat does an incredible job of shedding dirt and moisture. Giving baths a few times per year is about all that is needed in that regard. Shedding is minimal throughout the year and only weekly brushing is necessary. During the spring, however, the down coat “blows” and it seems like your home and yard are growing hair. This process usually takes about 3 weeks, and daily grooming with a rake and a slicker brush is necessary to avoid matting. Breeding females will blow coat after whelping, then regrow the down and blow again later in the spring doubling the workload.
