What are the greatest challenges facing our African American community and how can social workers help?
One of the challenges that I face everyday is empowering people to grasp hold of hope. So many have faced such traumatic or dismal situations that there is little hope in their life. Another challenge is getting them to trust. Many clients have been let down so frequently that they don’t believe that people care anymore. I try to make a positive impact on all people that I come into contact with. It’s interesting with the economy the way it is today. All of us are only a lay off away from the situations we find ourselves helping our clients through. Many parents and students have had questions about the role of a social worker in the school setting. Below is a list of some of the things that a school social worker can do to help families: • Obtain health insurance (Medical Assistance or CHIP) Provide assistance for drug and alcohol concerns (student or parent) • Locate support services in the community (housing, food, medication, health providers, clothing, employment & transportation)
