What are the good things about working in management consultancy?
Firstly, there’s the opportunity to work in and alongside various different organisations, all of which want to make changes, so the work can be very different over time. I have worked with BA, for pharmaceutical companies, government departments, electronics companies, and the armed forces – things that are out of the public eye. Plus, it’s great to be able to influence things, and to have an advisory role. And consultancy firms hire bright people, so you get to work with clever colleagues. You also get to work with a wide variety of interesting people from the client companies who bring different experiences with them And the bad things? Well, it’s a very intense job in challenging environments, and there can be long hours. There can also be a lot of travelling involved – at one point I was commuting to Holland, Monday to Friday, which was very hard.
