What are the goals and targets of the EPI?
The goal of the EPI is to achieve universal child immunization. The target for 1990 was to achieve 80% immunization coverage of children in the developing world by their first birthday. This goal was successfully met. At the World Summit of 1990, the goal of 90% immunization coverage of one-year-olds was sought by the year 2000. Starting in 2000, the world community began to assess their progress towards that goal, and in May 2002 the UN General Assembly held a Special Session on Children. At that time, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan reported that while the goal of 90% coverage for the previous decade of 1990-2000 was not reached, many important accomplishments were realized: • 65 countries achieved the 1990 World Summit goal of reducing child mortality by one third or more, and more than 100 countries reduced deaths by one fifth; • 1.5 million fewer children died by the end of 2000 than in 1990; • the high levels of child immunization reached in the late 1980s in most regions had bee
