What are the Functions of the Pituitary Gland?
Pituitary Gland Function – The Anterior Pituitary Also known as adenohypophysis, this section of the pituitary gland is responsible for secreting vital endocrine hormones such as the growth hormone (GH) for stimulating growth and cell reproduction and regeneration in humans and other animals; prolactin (PRL) for stimulating milk for nursing mothers and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which is for stimulating the adrenal cortex. The anterior lobe releases hormones to stimulate the thyroid gland, known as the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). It also releases the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) for taking care of the development, growth, pubertal maturation and reproductive processes of the body. Another hormone, which is the luteinizing hormone (LH) is secreted in order to stimulate the ovulation and corpus luteum development in female and stimulates leydig cell production of testosterone in males.
