The adrenal glands are small glands that sit on top of each kidney, like a hat. These glands are part of the endocrine system and are responsible for many biological functions mainly in the response to stress. This gland is composed of the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla, both of which have different functions. The adrenal cortex secretes three different groups of hormones: (1) Mineralocorticoids – mainly aldosterone, (2) Glucocorticoids – mainly Cortisol or hydrocortisone, and (3) Sex Hormones – resemble testosterone. Mineralocorticoids help to control that amount of minerals salts (sodium and potassium) in the blood. Glucocorticoids main functions are to help maintain normal blood glucose concentration and along with the adrenal medullas hormones they maintain normal blood pressure and promote a normal recovery from inflammation.
