What are the functions of surveying in civil engineering construction?
You mention geomatics. Use this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomatics Meanwhile back to Surveying and Civil Engineering. The initial use will be to do a ground survey of the construction site, so the amounts or earthworks and relationships to surrounding features can be established (amongst other things). Next is to set out the construction grid and then to set out the locations for piles, foundations etc. Setting out locations for holding down bolts for columns. Setting out formwork locations and verticality. After everything is constructed carry out a final survey to be able to draw the as-built drawings. later in the life of the structure carry out monitoring surveys to check for movement or changes. Not a comprehensive answer, that would take pages, but it should give you an idea.
