What Are the Focused Approach English Language Development (ELD) Institutes?
The CRLP Focused Approach ELD Institutes are 20-hour trainings designed for California educators who have English Learners in their classrooms and who are implementing the 2002 Houghton Mifflin Reading program in grades K – 6. The focus is on frontloading ELD for Houghton Mifflin Reading. This is one component of ELD and provides ample opportunities to teach and practice many necessary language skills. However, Systematic ELD must also be included in order to provide English Learners a complete ELD program. The Focused Approach training was developed in response to requests from districts and schools around the state as they strive to close the achievement gap and ensure that all students are able to participate fully and successfully in the core language arts program. The purpose of the Institutes is to prepare teachers to effectively teach language throughout the instructional day, with particular emphasis on how to link language instruction to reading instruction using the new Calif
